Angelina Jolie Reveals Double Mastectomy
In a stunning show of courage and a touching personal revelation Angelina Jolie shared with the public that she decided to have a double mastectomy in oder to help prevent the high risk she carries of getting breast cancer. She has a mutant form of a gene that makes it likely for her to get breast and ovarian cancer. The gene is BRCA1 and Jolie had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer and 50% of ovarian cancer. She stated that when she was sure this was her health reality, she became proactive in minimizing the risk and as such decided to have a preventative double mastectomy.
With her six children, it was important for Jolie to assure them that they won't lose her to breast cancer, the same way she lost her mother. Jolie's public revelation of her personal health information was done on purpose to serve as a role model for women who may be in similar situations, though obviously she had an expensive private surgery that may not be available for all women. However, all in all it's a powerful step for women who see a beautiful icon like Jolie and think she has no problems similar to their own. Instead, she reveals that she does and that one can be strong and proactive in how one responds.
